Refreshing In Its Honesty

I love…
…watching you interact with others when you don’t know I’m watching. Seeing you talk, laugh, tear up and share with those you trust is refreshing in its honesty.

From “No Man is an Island” by Thomas Merton
The beginning of love
is the will to let those we love
be perfectly themselves,
the resolution not to twist them
to fit our own image.
If in loving them
we do not love
what they are, but only
their potential likeness to ourselves,
then we do not love them:
we only love the reflection
of ourselves we find in them

Our Gaze Still Locked

I love…
…after kissing when our faces are only a few inches apart and we look directly into each other’s eyes for a little while and then kiss again with our gaze still locked onto each other.

Nicholas Gordon from http://www.poemsforfree.com/
Passion understands far more than reason,
Seeing in the dark with more than sight.
Truth, in truth, can vary with the season,
Nor can you ever know you’ve got it right.
So throw yourself into the stream of being
And let the moment take you where it will.
Fear does nothing for the bitter keening
That only love’s sweet sacrifice can still.

In Your Hands

I love…
…how sometimes you hold my face in your hands and look directly into my eyes and say “I love you”.  Never has anyone made me feel as loved as you do.

American Screen Writer Joss Whedon
When I say, “I love you,” it’s not because I want you or because I can’t have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I’ve seen your kindness and your strength. I’ve seen the best and the worst of you. And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You’re a hell of a woman.

Ever and a Day

I love…
…to put my arms around your tiny waist and pull your hips against mine while you put your arms around my neck to draw my face close to yours.

From a Gershwin song called “Love Is Here To Stay”
The more I read the papers
The less I comprehend
The world and all it capers
And how it all will end
Nothing seems to be lasting,
But that isn’t our affair;
We’ve got something permanent,
I mean in the way we care.
It’s very clear
Our love is here to stay;
Not for a year
But ever and a day.

I Am Yours

I remember…
…watching you dry off your long, wavy hair with a towel after taking a long shower.

Elizabeth Barrett to Robert Browning July 3, 1846
…I am yours – your own:
and it is impossible
in my belief,
that I can…
be less yours,
on this side the grave
or across it.

Wonderful Tonight

I remember…
…watching you get dressed before we would go out and thinking how beautiful you are.

From the song “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton
I feel wonderful
Because I see
the love light
in your eyes.
And the wonder
of it all
Is that you just don’t realize
How much I love you.

In Your Eyes

I remember…
…how you lit up when you first saw me after I had been away.  I knew I was loved by just looking in your eyes…

Leo Tolstoy to his fiancé, Valeria Arsenev Nov. 2, 1856
I already love in you your beauty, but I am only beginning to love in you that which is eternal and ever precious – your heart, your soul. Beauty one could get to know and fall in love with in one hour and cease to love it as speedily; but the soul one must learn to know.

Devotedly and Lovingly

I remember…
…how we liked to sit across the table when we ate out so we could look at each other as we talked.

Randolph S. Churchill to future wife Jeanette August 1873
I can assure you dearest Jeannette you have not been out of my thoughts hardly for one minute since I left you Monday. I have written to my father everything, how much I love you, how much I long and pray, and how much I would sacrifice if it were necessary to be married to you and to live ever after with you. …My first and only love… Believe me ever to be yours devotedly and lovingly.
